Music Spotlight 2 — A-Trio

What does German indie rock sound like? When it has taste and style, it sounds like A-Trio. The band was formed in Magdeburg by André Weißkeller and has been around for a few years. They’ve done tons of shows and concerts so it’s amazing that they’re still struggling to make it. One reason may be that they had to change their band name in 2011 from Stayded, which may have obscured them a bit. They have one EP out there called Vorgeschriebene Ansichtssache which you can get at their website here.

Now that we have a bit of a biography here, let’s take a listen.

Did I mention that they’re from Magdeburg? They’re quite proud of this. Magdeburg State of Mind was done with Philipp Schmidt who appears to be involved to some degree with a number of German indie artists, including A-Trio. Or at least he was while they were known as Strayded (his own site doesn’t have their updated name). He also seems to have connections with the cheerleaders you saw in the last song. No, that wasn’t a sex joke. Apparently, Magdeburg has their own cheer squad known and mascots as the Guardian Angels. TIL. Here you can see them performing the song live with the Angels that’s pretty good.

Motifs like that are pretty cool for a German band considering their goofy American pop culture connotations. As a matter of fact you can see a lot of influences from that country in their music. My personal favorite of their songs is quite a bit more like American power rock than anything in Germany right now. Check out this jam:

It even has Football, not to be confused with that strange creature Fußball. ;)

Overall A-Trio is a great band with a lot of potential. They’re getting a little more attention then they used to and have had some live appearances on TV. I’m quite impressed with their stuff and their lead singers vocals. They have great showmanship and good beats. Want to see more of their stuff? Check out their sites:

Music Spotlight 1 — Vist

German music being the totally amazing thing that it is, I’ve decided that it would be cool to have an artist spotlight post every now and then. All the following posts will be organized pretty much in the same way as this one. They’re going to have examples of their work and reviews of their style. I’m going to shoot for less famous artists but I’m ok with bringing up more mainstream groups and singers, because some are just worth mentioning. Tell me what you guys think, and if you want any particular genres. Feel free to recommend that one group or singer that only you and your friends have heard of!

To start things off, we have a hip-hop artist from Gelnhausen by the name of Vist. She’s currently unsigned, so rejoice hipsters! However, she’s so talented that it’s hard to believe that she won’t get noticed by a major label for much longer. Some of her songs on YouTube have already broken into the 6 digit range of views and many get 5. Keep an eye on her, because Vist could really make it into the limelight. As a rapper, her style is flowing and highly emotive. She has a good singing range and her voice is pretty soothing. Her songs are good for just chilling on a nice day, which is relatively rare for the genre. Many of her songs feature other rappers, who often aren’t that well known either, so you’ll get more discoveries than one with this post.

This is one her latest songs, so it will give you a good feel for what she can do at her best:

This song was a compilation with the rapper Silv-R, who has worked with her in the past on other projects. Their song Selbstgespräche won Track of the Month for September 2008 over at Check him out too, because he’s another YouTube rapper with a lot of potential.

My personal favorite of all her tracks is this:

“Weißt du noch?” is from her EP Sternenkind, and is so powerful that I have no problems saying that it brings me to tears every once and a while. For those who can’t Deutsch, it’s about what she’d say to someone very dear to her who died, if she could speak to him just one more time. She’s filled with regret, because she loved him and never told him. Though not a title track technically, it is where the EP gets if name from: Sternenkind meaning “star child”. i.e. the unnamed guy, who now has everyone’s attention, the accidental star of the show. This is also the first song I heard by her, and I instantly became a fan. She’s very creative and also prolific. She has a lot of great songs for someone who’s only been doing this for 5 years. I highly recommend her, even if hip-hop and rap isn’t your thing. You can check out more of her stuff here:
